Why is One Side of Your Garage Door Hanging Lower?

Technician measuring and leveling steel structural columns

A crooked garage door hanging lower on one side requires immediate leveling of structural tracks.

If your garage door is crooked, with one side hanging lower than the other, or if it jams when closing, do not force it to run. Operating an unbalanced door can cause structural track damage.

Top Causes of a Crooked Door

A crooked door is usually caused by:

  • Slipped Cable: The steel cable has jumped off its track on the winding drum, winding unevenly on one side.
  • Broken Spring: If your door has two torsion springs, one snapping leaves all the lift load on the remaining spring, causing the door to hang lower on the broken side.
  • Unequal Tension: If extension springs were replaced unevenly, one side will lift faster than the other.
