How to Measure for a New Garage Door: A DIY Sizing Guide

Blueprints, planning tools and a yellow tape measure

Carefully measure rough opening width, height, side room, and headroom clearance before ordering.

Before purchasing a new garage door, taking precise measurements of your garage opening and internal space is essential. Even a half-inch difference can prevent standard tracking from fitting properly.

Four Key Measurements

Measure these areas using a standard tape measure:

  1. Rough Opening: Measure the width and height of the door opening inside the wooden frame.
  2. Side Room: Measure the distance from the edge of the opening to the side wall (standard tracks require at least 3-4 inches).
  3. Headroom: Measure the space from the top header to the ceiling. Standard setups require 10-12 inches; low-headroom tracks need 4-6 inches.
  4. Backroom: Measure the distance from the opening to the rear of the garage (usually door height plus 18 inches).
