Slide Gates vs. Swing Gates: Choosing the Best Driveway Gate
An automatic driveway gate provides security, privacy, and curb appeal. When designing your entry gate system, the first major decision is choosing how the gate opens: sliding to the side (slide gate) or swinging open (swing gate).
Slide Gates: Best for Tight Spaces
Slide gates roll along a track parallel to your fence or wall.
- Pros: Ideal for short driveways, as they require no clearance space in front or behind the gate. They are highly secure and operate reliably on sloped driveways.
- Cons: Requires clear lateral space along your wall to slide into, and the ground track must be kept clear of dirt and debris.
Swing Gates: Elegant and Classic
Swing gates swing open like a standard door, either inward or outward.
- Pros: Offers a classic, grand estate look. They have fewer moving parts than slide gates and do not require a ground track.
- Cons: Requires a large amount of flat clearance space in your driveway. They are difficult to install on steep slopes.
