How to Fix Squeaking Garage Door Hinges and Tracks
A squeaking or grinding garage door is more than just an annoyance—it is a cry for lubrication. Metal parts rubbing together dry will create friction, causing premature wear and strain on your opener motor.
The Golden Rule of Garage Lubrication
Never use WD-40 or heavy grease on your tracks. WD-40 is a degreaser, not a lubricant; it will dry out the bearings. Heavy grease acts like a dirt magnet, turning dust into a thick, abrasive paste that jams the rollers. Instead, use a high-quality **silicone spray** or **white lithium grease**.
What to Lubricate (and What to Avoid)
Focus your maintenance on these key areas:
- Hinges: Spray the pivot points on all steel hinges connecting the door panels.
- Rollers: Apply lubricant directly to the ball bearings inside each roller wheel. (If you have nylon rollers, do not lubricate the nylon wheels themselves).
- Springs: Spray a light coat over the entire length of the torsion springs to reduce friction between the coils.
- Tracks: Keep tracks clean and dry. Wipe the inside of the rails with a clean rag. Do not apply thick grease inside the tracks, as it causes rollers to slide instead of spin.
